Why this story?

What inspired the world of TIW and my author journey

It started with a dream... Cheesy right? I know, but seriously.

I began my writing journey more than eight years ago, inspired by a vivid dream I had during the postpartum season after my first child was born. Over the following years, I wrote whenever time allowed. When my first draft was accidentally deleted, I was devastated and stepped away from the story for nearly five years. However, after my sister found a copy of the rough draft's prologue that I had sent her, I made the decision to begin again. Now, after more than two years of continuous work, I am finally seeing the story I have carried for so long come to life on the page.

I grew up outside a major metropolitan area and now live on a homestead in the foothills of Mount St. Helens. Living here, I have experienced a state where government and major corporations seem to care little for the working class that makes up the majority of our population. I have seen firsthand the struggles facing average citizens as we are taxed and priced to the point of theft, while corporations and politicians grow richer.

The deep psychological elements of this story stem from my own battle through severe postpartum depression and lifelong anxiety. I took the process of portraying these mental health struggles very seriously, wanting to show that although they can feel like an insurmountable anchor at times, our feelings are a fundamental part of the human experience.

I'm Kay Cook, working on my debut novel, an adult speculative romance. This Is Why We Survived traces the slow, creeping origin of a dystopian world through the eyes of those who remember how it was before. I create stories for readers who want romance that feels messy and deeply human, showing how even in our darkest, lowest moments when all seems lost, love can remind us why we fight, inspire us to hope, and challenge us to want better for ourselves.
